Everyone’s talking about the environment and recycling these days, no?
The point is – who is practising it? Anyone can talk about but what is your stand and what have you done after talking/hearing about it?
When I sat for my IELTS exam, I was asked to write about something in the lines of “power of one” (the question provided a statement saying only big corporate companies can make a difference – something like that) – and I used recycling as my point. If you have ONE person in every household that recycles, you’re set. I’m quite sure that the rubbish would be sorted accordingly. If NONE in a household recycles – that’s when you generate even more rubbish.
Okay, I’m particularly irritating. I stand by like a hawk to see how and what you throw your things. Sometimes when it’s already in the bin; I take it out, rinse it and place it in a separate bag.
At cell, I know it’s difficult to clean up after so many people and thus we use disposable things. By now Hazel and Sally knows I would prefer to use Hazel’s dishes and would rather clean it on my own than using disposable plates. Soon I will make a promise to Hazel that when I’m around for cell, I’d clean up for her if everyone would use her dishes instead of disposable ones. *hehe* Soon! I’m not around for cell quite often these days. *sigh*
It’s very easy to recycle. You just have to start somewhere.
I used to buy things by their price – now I do a double take to see if the material the things come in are recyclable. I’m not perfect, I still buy things by how nicely it’s packaged (and sometimes feeling really guilty after!) – but I try to cut down lor. Even if it’s more expensive to buy things in bottles/tins as compared to Tetra Pak/other packaging, as least I know I can recycle the containers. It’s not that Tetra Pak’s packaging is not recyclable but I saw a documentary (which also told me they couldn’t recycle Tetra Pak’s packaging last time but they can now!) showing how much more “work” has to be done (not to mention energy/water consumption) to separate the paper, aluminium and plastic.
Have to remind self to bring own bags when going out to buy groceries! Put it in car for “just in cases”.
I’ve also stopped taking shark’s fin soup (which I really like…but I think it’s more of the soup rather than the shark’s fin lah so I think I can satisfy my craving with fun see) – save the sharks!
My AC unit at home KO for don’t know how long (because I’ve not used it…for a very long time!) and it’s not working properly now. Even when I got back from Glasgow, I didn’t use it (thank God I came back during the rainy season, so the heat/humidity wasn’t too bad to bear with). The only time I have no choice but to use the AC is in the car, when driving in the afternoon. If I can do without when traveling in the morning or at night, I go without. In the afternoon cannot lah – I can’t be all sweaty when I meet my clients, right?
Another thing I don’t like is the traveling around in my car alone. I really do prefer to carpool but in my job, I can’t. It’s quite impossible. Hmmm…
I’m not a hardcore, fanatic environmentalist – I’m just trying to do my part. Sometimes I know I can’t change some things…then I have to let it go (though still grudgingly – like lunch packs and plastic bags for camp!!!).
So, did you sort out your garbage today? Did you turn off the lights when you left the other room? Did you shut down your computer when you go out for lunch? Did you tahpau again instead of sitting down for the meal (when you can afford the time)? Did you bring your own grocery bag when you KNOW you’re going shopping? Did you bring your own food container – knowing well you tahpau lunch everyday from the same place?
